" and there’s nothing like sharing an experience you love with people you like too."

True. One wants those who inspire and you love. But one needs training partners you can trust and are honest. I've been in boats with people I really didn't like much, but I know they were committed, would try hard every stroke, and I could learn from. They were great teammates but not friends.

Comment on Shox-Box Review by RowShoxBox

Flywheel Fitness – thanks for taking the time to evaluate and review our Shox-Box products. We’d like to take the opportunity to respond to your feedback.

1. Technique Improvement–
There are specific parts of rowing technique that can be focused on and improved using the Shox-Box system that are not necessarily addressed by the Core Perform or C2 Slides: (A.) Rushing the slide (B.) Dipping at the catch (C.) Uneven foot pressure (D.) Roughness at the catch and the finish (E.) Sense of balance engaging key muscle groups i.e. core & obliques.

For experienced rowers, what we have found is that the real benefit of the Shox-Box system is found in the last third of an erg workout when fatigue sets in and technique starts to suffer. The Shox-Box provides feedback on the declining form and reminds rowers to focus on elements of their technique.

As for the “very little lateral movement” and lack of adjustability of the Shox-Box system for a lightweight rower, we are currently designing a softer, less stable system to benefit lightweight rowers and to increase the challenge for more experienced rowers. We’d love to hear what you think of this idea.

2. Relieves Discs & Joints-
We’d like to clarify that our company does not want rowers to disregard proper rowing technique when using an erg nor does the Shox-Box system promote rowing poorly. Even with proper form, harsh downward forces (8-25 pounds per stroke on an erg) are still placed on the body at the catch and finish which are offloaded by the Shox-Box. This effect is cumulative so that the more you row, the more benefit you will receive from using the Shox-Box by avoiding these repetitive stresses. Shox-Box customer, rower, and Powerhouse Fitness gym owner, Jack Nunn, who always teaches proper rowing technique, just had this say about the Shox-Box: “I really can't thank you enough and it has really helped me get stronger on the erg along with less stress on the back :) I can teach a million classes without being sore. It's awesome!!!”

There are also many people that do not have strong cores and strong backs (etc.) that need a way to strengthen and comfort while training, although they use proper form. Plus, for people that have pre-existing conditions, pain can be exacerbated by these downward forces and the rigidity of the rowing machine (unlike a buoyant boat) although they use proper rowing technique.

3. Enhanced strength training-
In addition to increasing the engagement of the core with the Shox-Box system, the Shox-Boxes can be used to work specific muscle groups and vary erg workouts. If you use the rear box only, the workout is focused on increasing leg strength. If you use the front box only, the workout can be focused on hips and hip flexors.

Did you know that the Shox-Box system can be used on the C2 slides?

This is a great post!
And, thanks for the shout out! :) I had just never thought of it that way... even if we race at a 2:1 ratio (since many of us can't maintain 3:1 at SR32+) that's still 1000m of the race that we aren't actually pushing. It blew my mind.
I guess that's all to say... I agree. It's the most important part, for many reasons.

Great drills, too!

-andrearows :)
